Family Member Residence Permit

Family Visa

International students studying in Finland can bring family members (spouse and children under 18) who may apply for residence permits based on family ties.

Eligibility: Student must have sufficient means of support (approximately €560/month plus €100/month per family member). Family members must have valid passports and meet general entry requirements.

Dependant Work Rights

Family members who receive a residence permit on the basis of family ties have the right to work in Finland without a separate work permit.

Eligibility: Valid residence permit based on family ties to a student or employee in Finland.

Work Rights During Studies

Work While Studying

International students with a valid residence permit for studies have the right to work up to 30 hours per week during term time and full-time during holiday periods.

Eligibility: Valid student residence permit issued by Finnish Immigration Service.

Post-Study Work

After graduation, international students may apply for a one-year extended residence permit to seek employment or start a business in Finland.

Eligibility: Completed degree from a Finnish higher education institution. Application must be submitted before current student permit expires.

Continuous and Permanent Residence

Permanent Residency

After four years of continuous legal residence in Finland (with valid residence permits), individuals may apply for a continuous residence permit (P permit). After meeting additional requirements, permanent residence may be granted.

Eligibility: Four years of continuous residence, secure means of livelihood, no serious criminal record. Study periods count as half-time toward permanent residence (2 years of study = 1 year).
