Eligibility: The student must have sufficient financial means to support family members (approximately €560/month for first adult, €480/month for additional adults, €340/month per child). Family members can apply for residence permits based on family ties.
Right to Work During Studies
Work While StudyingStudents with a valid residence permit for studies may work up to 30 hours per week during term time and full-time during holiday periods (June-August and during official university holiday breaks). No separate work permit is required.
Eligibility: Valid student residence permit holder studying full-time at a Finnish higher education institution.
Family Member Right to Work
Dependant Work RightsFamily members of students who receive a residence permit on the basis of family ties have the right to work in Finland without restrictions or a separate work permit.
Eligibility: Valid residence permit based on family ties to a student permit holder.
Pathway to Permanent Residence
Permanent ResidencyAfter holding continuous residence permits for four years (time as student counts with 50% weight, i.e., 2 years of studies = 1 year toward permanent residence), individuals can apply for permanent residence (P permit). After obtaining work-based residence permit post-graduation, the pathway becomes clearer. Finnish citizenship can be applied for after 5-8 years of continuous residence.
Eligibility: Four years of continuous residence in Finland on valid permits, sufficient income, no debts to the state, basic Finnish/Swedish language skills (required for permanent residence and citizenship).
