Guide to Obtaining an Authorisation Residence Permit in Denmark for Nurses

When the Danish Patient Safety Authority (DPSA) has approved your nursing education, you become eligible to apply for a 3-year residence permit under the authorisation scheme. This permit allows you to stay in Denmark while completing the necessary steps to obtain your Danish nursing authorisation.

In this guide, we will go through the requirements, conditions, and rights associated with the authorisation residence permit.

Conditions for Obtaining the Authorisation Residence Permit

To qualify for an authorisation residence permit, nurses must meet the following requirements:

1. Proof of Financial Stability

•Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves and any accompanying family members throughout their stay in Denmark.

2. Danish Patient Safety Authority (DPSA) Approval

•Applicants must provide a copy of the DPSA’s approval of their education and qualifications, confirming their eligibility to obtain Danish nursing authorisation.

Rights Granted Under the Authorisation Residence Permit

Once granted an authorisation residence permit, nurses enjoy certain rights, including:

Travel Privileges

•Holders can travel but must maintain a Danish address and must not stay abroad for more than six consecutive months.

•The permit allows stays in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, but it does not permit employment in other countries.

Work Authorization

• Nurses can work in Denmark without needing to apply for a separate work permit.

Danish Language Education

•Free Danish language lessons are available, but applicants must pay a deposit to enroll. Failure to complete the modules within the required timeframe may result in the loss of this deposit.

Additional Important Information

Application Timeline

    • Applicants should not submit their authorisation residence application earlier than six months before their planned travel date to Denmark.
  •
    • Submitting an early application will result in rejection, and the processing fee will not be refunded.

Family Accompaniment

    • The residence permit allows certain family members to accompany the applicant to Denmark, including:

                   •Spouse

                   •Registered or cohabiting partner

                   •Children under 18 years old

Authorisation Process Duration

•Nurses have three years to complete the authorisation process once their education is deemed equivalent to Danish nursing education by the DPSA.

•This is separate from the three-year residence permit, which allows nurses to stay in Denmark while working on their authorisation.

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of what nurses need to know before applying for an authorisation residence permit in Denmark. Ensuring you meet the eligibility criteria and understand your rights and obligations will help make the transition smooth and successful.
